There are always unexpected surprises that make me want to throw my equipment in the water! (Seriously, it’s all part of the job, and the satisfaction I get from creating ocean sounds that people want is simply phenomenal.)

One of my favorite mishaps occurred when I was recording in a relatively secluded spot along the Atlanta Ocean one day: I use high-end microphones covered with a synthetic fur windscreen to dampen or quiet the sound of wind hitting the microphone. While recording that day, a sea bird landed on my microphone stand while I was recording, leaving a little “gift” on the windscreen. When I got back to the studio and washed the windscreen to clean off the “gift,” all the long fur began to fall off. I ended up with a bald wind screen. Ain’t that some crap!

Another time I had my feet in the water while recording, getting the microphone up close and personal just above the waves to capture the essence of the ocean audio. There I was, with my eyes closed, blissfully enjoying the sun, the surf, and the warm ocean lapping at my feet when all of a sudden, a strong wave toppled me right over! Ker-splash! Not only did I get totally wet, my recording equipment got soaked and I lost several hours of audio recording. I didn’t have to throw my stuff in the water; Mother Nature did it for me….

I found that when I stayed at an oceanside hotel or relaxed on the beach, I seemed to be able to get a good sleep. So I recorded the ocean waves at St. Joseph State Park in Port St. Joe, Florida. Back then, it was a one-hour recording because the tape recorder reels would only hold 60 minutes of tape.

I brought the tape into the studio and then post-scored the sea waves sound with a stereo electric piano track. When that phase was finished, I added some white noise and mixed it to create a master from which I produced cassette tapes. Wow! Did it help me sleep like a baby all through the night!

Hearing how I overcame my insomnia with sea sound mixed with music, friends and family clamored to try it. They used it, loved it and really pushed me to share it commercially and do something with it. I named the album Sea of Serenity and started selling the tape with great success. And thus my foray into the world of therapeutic sound recordings was begun!

Over the years, I’ve digitally enhanced Sea of Serenity for a crisper, cleaner sound of the sea. This album is now available in CD and mp3 downloadable formats, which enables continuous play for however long you want, even all night long. It continues, to this day, to be one of our best-selling sounds to promote relaxation and sleep.

I’ve been recording ocean sounds for many years, and I’m still amazed at the variety and subtleties of wave sounds, including the tempo of ocean wave cycles, loudness of the rushing water sound and the crashing/lapping of the waves on the beach. Time of day, time of year, time of tides and weather also have an impact on the sounds, even at the same ocean or seaside location! If a wave cycle is too fast or aggressive, I won’t use it for a relaxing ocean sound product.

Many times I found what I thought was the perfect spot to record. But then there were extraneous sounds that could be very disruptive to the flowing sound of waves, such as a screeching bird, a loud airplane flying overhead, a beach vendor loudly announcing his wares for sale, or screaming kids frolicking in the water — good sounds of life but not so wonderful when one is trying to record only natural ocean waves!
