When I’m out recording ocean audio for my web site’s ocean cd and mp3 downloads, I think I have the best job in the world (and so do my envious friends and family!). However…
There are always unexpected surprises that make me want to throw my equipment in the water! (Seriously, it’s all part of the job, and the satisfaction I get from creating ocean sounds that people want is simply phenomenal.)
One of my favorite mishaps occurred when I was recording in a relatively secluded spot along the Atlanta Ocean one day: I use high-end microphones covered with a synthetic fur windscreen to dampen or quiet the sound of wind hitting the microphone. While recording that day, a sea bird landed on my microphone stand while I was recording, leaving a little “gift” on the windscreen. When I got back to the studio and washed the windscreen to clean off the “gift,” all the long fur began to fall off. I ended up with a bald wind screen. Ain’t that some crap!
Another time I had my feet in the water while recording, getting the microphone up close and personal just above the waves to capture the essence of the ocean audio. There I was, with my eyes closed, blissfully enjoying the sun, the surf, and the warm ocean lapping at my feet when all of a sudden, a strong wave toppled me right over! Ker-splash! Not only did I get totally wet, my recording equipment got soaked and I lost several hours of audio recording. I didn’t have to throw my stuff in the water; Mother Nature did it for me….
Lucky for you, you don’t have to worry about such calamities to enjoy the wondrous sounds of the ocean, since I’ve done it for you. Please be sure to listen to the ocean audio cd and mp3 downloads on my web site. (I promise that you won’t hear any bird “splats” or water thrashing!
